5 Best Sugar Cookie Secrets

Fall is around the corner which means fall and winter baking are about to be in full force. Over the years I have worked really hard on perfecting a sugar cookie and royal icing decorating (more recently I have started to make cookie cakes but more on that later). Anyways, I have 5 of my best kept sugar cookie secrets for you so that you too can have the perfect sugar cookies this year! (*Post contains affiliate link)

  1. Roll with powdered sugar. Hear me out, I had always used flour but it left the cookies with a taste and texture on the outside I did not love. Enter powdered sugar. Next time you are doing a roll out/shape cutting sugar cookie, roll them out with powdered sugar, not flour. You can thank me later, I will wait!

  2. No recipe is perfect until you adjust it for where you live. I can give you my sugar cookie recipe, sure. You can find thousands of different ones on Pinterest, cook books, your grandma’s kitchen. But until you start adjusting one yourself, you probably aren’t going to get the “perfect cookie”. Your altitude, weather, humidity, your oven etc ALL greatly change how a cookie comes out. If someone tells you otherwise, they are wrong.

  3. Lower your oven temperature. Cookies come out better when your oven is at 325, not 400. You’re welcome.

  4. Do not overbake. I mean it. If it looks done in the oven, it’s past done and you are going to have a crunchy cookie. But hey if that’s your thing then awesome. But other than that, you want to watch your cookies very closely and get them out of the oven BEFORE they turn golden on the edges. They will continue to bake on the pan even after you take them out so this is really important! Again, I can tell you I bake mine for 12 minutes but that is going to depend on how thick your cookies are and your oven so you need to experiment for yourself to get your perfect cooking time.

  5. Get yourself a rolling pin with guides that will get you the perfect thickness every single time. There are tons of options out there but here is my favorite!

Happy baking friends! Hope these help you perfect your sugar cookie at home!
